[Live] Sierra Leoneans urged to be 'peaceful and democratic' hours to opening of polls | Africanews

With just hours to the opening of polls in Sierra Leone, the electoral commission has asked voters to reflect commitment to peace and democracy. In a statement issued on the eve of the March 7 elections, the commission said it is ready to conduct elections in a way that is inclusive, peaceful and democratic. Polls will open at 7am and close at 5pm. You do not have to be the biggest, the fastest or the strongest to determine the future of your country. Voters are required to be in teh same place they registered and must present a voter ID card to the electoral officials at polling stations. ‘‘Voting is non – violent and yet it is a very powerful act,’‘ says the Natioanl Electoral Commission (NEC) chair, Mohamed Conteh. ‘‘You do not have to be the biggest, the fastest or the strongest to determine the future of your country.’‘ pic.twitter.com/bSGHsdYP6I The Sierra Leone NEC said over 3.1 million voters registered to vote, the highest figure the country has ever had. The ruling All Peoples’ Congress (APC) have picked former foreign minister Samura Kamara as flagbearer whiles the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples’ Party (SLPP) is fielding a former military ruler Julius Maado Bio, who lost the last election to Bai Koroma.
