Egerton crisis deepens after don snubs top job

6 days ago, 18:25

Leadership crisis has hit Egerton University after its deputy vice-chancellor declined to take over the running of the Nakuru-based institution following the suspension of his boss.

Deputy vice-chancellor Alexander Kahi said he would not accept the role in an acting capacity because the council did not have powers to appoint a vice chancellor for the university.

The Egerton University Council suspended vice-chancellor Rose Mwonya on Monday and appointed Prof Kahi to hold the position temporarily.

“The council is supposed to recommend to the Cabinet secretary the suspension of the VC and then the minister appoints an acting VC and not the council,” he said yesterday.

The suspended VC has blamed her suspension on corruption cartels. She said the council was not happy with the manner in which she was fast-tracking the construction of the Sh2.4 billion library. She also denied claims that she spent Sh70 million on the construction of a gate at the university's Njoro campus.

“This gate they are talking about is not an ordinary gate. It was factored into our development plan. It is a security system with a canteen and was constructed after a long delay by the previous administration,” said Prof Mwonya.
