Inspired by history: Lord Erroll, a classic dining experience you don

It was date night. And being the festive season, I felt compelled to go big. I had a place in mind. A place I had been hoping to visit but hadn’t gotten round to. At 7.30pm, we drove into Lord Erroll, located in Nairobi’s upmarket Runda neighbourhood. Right at the reception, a sound of nature caught our attention... a waterfall feature coming from a green courtyard open to the sky, so welcoming, so refreshing. And on hand to receive us was a hostess with a warm smile, Brenda, who ushered us into the immaculately set up Lady Idina dining terraces. The al fresco seating area overlooks the Diana Hay Gardens featuring beautiful waterfalls, streams and ponds, creating a serene ambiance that gives a country-like feel to the place. Seeking a more intimate space, we were lucky to get a table in The Claremont, courtesy of Eva, the vivacious PR/Banqueting/Events manager. From the rich mahogany walls to the thick scarlet curtains, the oil paintings, a stained-glass ceiling that resembles ‘Michelangelo’ artwork, and a baby grand piano playing in the background next to a crackling fireplace, the sophisticated air lent the room what I imagine is the Victorian feel. We took a few minutes to take in the ambience, then we were ready to place our orders. We were then offered drinks menu and a la carte menu by our attentive waitress, Irene. Hot towels and warm bread assortment followed shortly. I started out with the cream of mushroom soup which was divine, while my lady opted for a prawn’s cocktail starter which she thoroughly enjoyed.  My main course, sautéed spicy jumbo prawns with spicy butter sauce on a bed of couscous was the best dish I have had in a while. My lady opted for the grilled Norwegian salmon that came with Italian risotto and wilted spinach. She loved how it was crispy on the outer, yet moist inside. This was washed down with Sauvignon Blanc. Dessert was a platter of cheese. This choice was one that I normally wouldn’t go for, but came highly recommended. It didn’t disappoint and it is a choice I will be making more often. As the night wore on, and with a bit of more time to kill, we decided to have a night cap but found The Highlander Lounge and it’s terrace fully occupied. On our way out, we spotted Eva who gave us a tour of Josslyn Hay Lounge, a new cozy, exclusive private space where she allowed us to have some silent swell time. This one is a typical victorian gentleman’s lounge complete with a drinks saloon, mahogany walls, artwork, antique furnishings, butler service, et al. It is advised to book Josslyn Hay Lounge in advance due to demand for private dining and meeting facilities, since it takes a maximum 14 pax only. We left a few hours later satiated and happy with our experience at The Lord Erroll. It was a pure coincidence that it happened to be a Thursday when ...
